When to go

Weather & Best Time to Visit Mexico

Mexico can be visited throughout the year thanks to its varied geography and generally pleasant climate. From tropical beaches to colonial mountain cities, each region offers a different travel experience.

Weather overview

Mexico can be visited all year round. Because of its varied geography, the climate changes by region, from warm coastal areas to cooler mountain cities.

Rainy season

The rainy season usually runs from late May to mid-September. Rain often comes in the late afternoon or evening, while mornings are usually sunny.

Mountain cities

Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca and San Cristóbal can feel cool in the morning and at night because of their altitude, while daytime is usually warm.

What to pack

A light sweater or jacket is recommended for mornings and evenings. During rainy season, bring a raincoat or compact umbrella.

Busy seasons

Mexico is usually busier in June, July, mid-December to mid-January, Easter holidays, and school vacation periods in July and August.

Spring Break

Beach destinations can be busier from late February through April, especially popular coastal areas such as Cancún and the Mexican Caribbean.

Quick travel notes

Average temperatures in many parts of Mexico are around 25°C to 30°C. Coastal areas and southern Mexico tend to be warmer and more humid from May to September.

Even during rainy season, travel is still very possible. Most days remain sunny for a large part of the day, with showers more common later in the afternoon.

Recommended packing

  • Light clothes for warm daytime weather
  • A sweater or light jacket for higher-altitude cities
  • Raincoat or compact umbrella from late May to September
  • Comfortable shoes for archaeological sites and city tours
  • Sun protection for beach, desert and outdoor destinations

Travel tip: for a quieter experience, avoid peak national vacation periods such as Easter, July and August school holidays, and the Christmas/New Year travel season.
